CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The weight of each sunrise and sunset pulled at my soul. Three days after the encounter in the diner, and I still couldn’t shake the memory of Tobias’s glare. His words had made a direct demarcation in my life. His eyes haunted me, eyes that begged for something, anything, to give him solace. No matter what I thought, I knew it wasn’t in fact a cry for help. Nevertheless, I found myself questioning my place, wondering if it wasn’t my duty to aid him, even if he didn’t want it.

What would my mother do in this situation? She’d have listened to Tobias fully, then she’d take every clue he could offer, find the missing beta, and destroy them both for good measure. Thank goodness Chicago wasn’t my mother’s territory. The Head of the House of Amber, Matron Consuela Renanta, ruled her sanjak with a silver fist and a jaded eye. Nevertheless, she had always been more tempered in her approach to policing the wolves under her jurisdiction than any red hood I knew.

Maybe I should go to her and relay what Tobias had said? If there were two wolves stuck in Chicago against their will and on the edge of moon madness, wouldn’t she be the most likely to expediently solve the situation?

No, it wouldn’t work, couldn’t work. As certain as Tobias seemed that Prof. Karmarov was somehow involved or must know something, there was no way he’d agree not to bring up the suspicions if Consuela became involved. There would be no good outcomes if hoods became aware of the genetic profiling and engineering Karmarov was undertaking, even if it had nothing to do with us. Not to mention, it would cost me my job.

What to do? I needed advice, advice from someone who I could trust to keep my worries to himself, who would ask the right questions but not too many questions.

I didn’t remember making the decision to dial the phone number when I already found myself listening to the ringing on the other end of the line. When the call connected and I heard my father’s voice, however, all my words left me.

“Geri?”

It had been weeks since we’d spoken, and like most conversations since I’d left home, it had been more a brawl than a friendly chat. The sharpness of his absence in my life intensified in the simple fact that he said my name with love every time I called. Each conversation with my dad was a fresh canvas, and he left it up to me what colors and shapes to paint.

“Hi, Papi. I, um… I need your help.”

“Are you in trouble?”

“No, I’m fine.” Taking a deep breath, I gathered myself from the edge of tears. “I need some advice is all.”

A smile blossomed in his voice. “Is it about a boy?”

“Kinda.” Better he think I had some sort of college crush than learn that I might have to kill a rogue wolf who’d gone over to lunacity. Or worse, help one I barely even knew.
